For UK based yoga teachers the answer to this may surprise you – NONE! Yoga is not regulated by the UK government, not only that there is no legal requirement to have public liability insurance to teach. So there are really no qualifications that you need to be a UK Yoga Teacher, from a legal point of view.
Now I’m not suggesting for one minute that you just go out tomorrow and start teaching, leave out the giant step of training and what I believe to be the essential step of having insurance. But it’s worth noting that this self-regulating (as it is un-regulated) world that is yoga teacher training is totally made up!
This isn’t a bad thing actually. I think the pros greatly out way the cons, but it can make it tricky navigating how and who we should train with. And it doesn’t get much easier to navigate from a trainer’s perspective.
There’s not a one-size-fits-all in terms of education (that’s education full stop). It is a good thing that there are many ways to train to be a yoga teacher, this choice means you can find the right course and trainer for you.
Advice for yoga trainers!
And if you’re a trainer here are some truths: in-person isn’t better than online, it’s just different; 3-to-4-week intensive YTTs are not bad, they’re just one way into the profession that really works for some; and your course is totally unique as it’s created by you, which is why there is room for us all.
The reality is nobody cares how long you’ve trained for, how, and who with. The only person who cares about this is you, so focus on what will work for you. Avoid getting stuck in ‘training procrastination’ once you’re trained just get out and teach!
Don’t forget the power of a specialism, such as pregnancy or yin yoga, and these shorter specialist trainings can be a great doorway into teaching yoga for the right person.
