Inviting free-form movement – Shimmy!
Today’s episode is the third in a 4-part series of mini-teaching clinics, where I’ll explore an aspect of yoga teaching.
Do you offer moments of free-form movement in your classes?
What if you asked your students to breathe, listen to their bodies and do whatever movement felt good?
This may be just what your students are here for, but perhaps many would politely leave asap!
If we are to trust the body’s wisdom and guide our students to tap into their self-regulating system, we have to find clever ways to begin to encourage moments of free movement. And as a yoga teacher, you’ll need and love this too!
When anything is new, or we feel uncertain, humour and fun is often the best way in, and this is why I love my word shimmy!
Let’s get the pelvis moving, not because we’ve got a load of stored-up emotions in the hips, who knows if this is the case or not, but because it’s fun, feels good and frees up the potential for movement in the whole body.
